Daniel Appiah Gyekye
Daniel Appiah Gyekye is an education, culture, digital media, and emerging diplomacy professional and a PhD candidate in Communication and Media Studies at the University of Oregon (expected 2027). His work explores immersive media, African folklore, Indigenous knowledge systems, and STEAM education, bridging education, technology, and culture to create opportunities for underserved communities.
He is committed to advancing educational equity, cultural exchange, and global collaboration. As the 2025 recipient of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Student Leadership Award at the University of Oregon, Daniel exemplifies a dedication to justice-oriented scholarship and community-centered service.
Daniel is the founder of Appiah Sports Impact, a nonprofit advancing youth development through sports and education in Africa, and the founder and president of the Ghanaian Students Association at the University of Oregon. He also serves as Executive Secretary for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with the Associated Students of the University of Oregon.
His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences including Harvard HPAIR, the 7th World Conference on Social Science and Humanities, and the Meaningful XR Conference. He has developed immersive AR prototypes that blend African folklore with STEM education, including the Ananse and the Wisdom Pot application.
Beyond academia, Daniel has been featured in media for his community initiatives — from securing $50,000 in emergency funding for international students to raising public awareness on Eugene’s traffic safety through the Vision Zero campaign
